6 Freeman

6 Freeman have had a great start to the year and have settled into year 6 really well. We are looking forward to having a great year together.
In mathematics, we are working on our multiplicative skills and being able to apply different strategies to solve word problems where we have to multiply 2 or 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers. We have got a bit competitive playing some online games to practise our times tables and some dice games to practise multiplication algorithms. As you can see in the photos, Roary joined in with some of these games.
In English, we have started reading Storm Boy and learning about the Coorong area in South Australia where the book is set as well as the meaning of some of the old-fashioned words used in the book. In writing, we have had fun learning about oxymorons and what they mean. The word oxymoron is derived from two Greek words: oxys meaning sharp and moros meaning dull. An oxymoron is two contradictory or opposing words that are placed next to each other. So, the word oxymoron is an oxymoron itself! Some interesting examples of oxymorons we have discussed are "awfully good", "a whole piece", "pretty ugly", "silent scream" and "growing smaller".
