Dear Parents/Carers,
Well – what a term it has been! And to be honest – what a year it has been thus far!
I certainly don’t ever remember a year in my teaching career that has been so fast paced in so many ways, and so slow paced in just as many.
I really do need to thank each and every member of our school community from our students to our staff to our families for their resilience and patience during these unprecedented times.
I suspect that we are nowhere near the end of this pandemic in any way, shape or form, particularly in light of what is currently happening in Melbourne and further afield in countries around the world.
Only time will tell what remains in store.
What I do know is that we have a wonderful school community that remains supportive of each other in difficult times.
I would like to wish every family a safe and enjoyable holiday break and look forward to seeing you all back in Term 3, in our new COVID ‘normal’.
Take care,
Justine Miller

The Gonski Institute have developed a set of parent guides to support parents through a range of issues related to their child’s education.
These resources, developed by Dr Amy Graham (Gonski Institute for Education Research Fellow), are designed to provide quality, up-to-date information for parents and carers. The guides combine translated research with practical tips for parents and carers to use with their own child. Topics range from digital device use, to social and emotional skills, play and transitioning to high school, among others.
We will be including some of these resources in our newsletters for the next little while and we hope they are of use to you!
This can be downloaded for greater readability.
K Purple have enjoyed being back at school full time after a very long break. We have been reading and analysing lots of interesting stories that help us understand perspective and point of view. As part of our activities for each week, we have looked at text specific vocab words, the different perspectives of each character and creating artworks that pair with our writing. K Purple have mastered using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops in our writing. We are getting better at including our single sounds, digraphs and sight words into our sentences. We hope you enjoy looking at our artworks and reading our sentences!

This term, 1S have created incredible papier-mâché hot air balloons. At the end of the learning from home phase, there were some leftover booklets that we reused to create these amazing masterpieces.
We inflated balloons and sealed them with a knot. Then we balanced our balloons on cups. We tore the leftover booklets into strips and soaked the paper in watered down paste. Carefully we spread the strips over our balloons until they were completely covered. It was messy, but it was so much fun! Then we had to wait for our balloons to dry.
When they were ready, we painted patterns on the balloons using bright colours. Some students used stripes, polka dots and spirals. After the paint had dried we popped the balloon inside using scissors. It was so exciting to watch the balloon deflate inside.
Finally, we created and attached our baskets to our balloons. We used sparkly chenille sticks to connect the basket to the balloon and then hung them in our classroom. We are so proud of our work. Don’t they look wonderful?

In Science, 3S have been investigating the properties of rocks and soil. We worked in collaborative learning teams to investigate the effects of erosion on various landforms. We enjoyed communicating and comparing our ideas while experimenting. Finally, we presented our results to the class. As groups we wrote reports and took pictures to record our findings.
GROUP 1: Brayden, Luca, Trey, Anya, Gideon, Naveenan
AIM: To investigate river action (running water)
PREPARATIONS: We made a sloping hill and formed a winding river running down the slope. We put rocks in various positions along the river: inside bend, outside bend and in the river. This was to observe the different effects.
OBSERVATIONS: When we poured the water down the river bed it formed a deep hole. The rock sunk and was covered in sand. The river became wider at the bottom with the erosion of the sand spilling into the tray. The outer bend eroded away and the inner bend became deeper.
GROUP 2: Claire, Sireen, Mithra, Angelina, Nayanika, Moey.
AIM: To investigate the effect of wind on a sand dune.
PREPARATIONS: We formed a sand dune, and put small stones on top. We each got a straw to blow to make the wind.
OBSERVATIONS: When we blew, the rocks stayed firm and the sand escaped and blew across the rocks. Eventually as the sand eroded away, the rocks gradually fell down the slope and landed at the bottom. However, the sand spread out all over the bottom of the tray.
GROUP 3: Shahriyar, Souad, Paaarth, Kaarthikeya
AIM: To investigate the effect of wave action on the beach
PREPARATIONS: We formed a beach using sand and pebbles and filled the rest of the tray with water. We used a plastic lid to form the waves.
OBSERVATIONS: The water eroded the sand away quickly to form a small cave. When the wave washed onto the beach the lighter minerals in the sand were swept into the water. These dissolved into the water and turned it cloudy. The water started shaping the beach into a curve.
GROUP 4: Pranya, Ryleigh, Carina,Jia,Binayak,Nicolas
AIM: To investigate water erosion from rain on a mountain
PREPARATIONS : We formed a mountain using dirt. We used a spray bottle to act as rain
OBSERVATIONS : The mountain started as tall and pointy. As the rain came, it started to round the mountain and the soil spilled down the mountain side. We then put popsticks in to form trees. This held the dirt together so less erosion occurred.
